“Statia”

St Eustatias

A small island 20 minutes south of St. Maarten by air – in little planes

July 13 thru July 20,  2020

This place is almost frozen in time – no cruise ships

You could call this a working type community with a few vacationers on island, the people are very nice and will stop and chat or just tell you how to get to where you were trying to go. Small island 10 sq. miles almost. Not much entertainment other than diving or historical stuff + some hiking. Google “The Quill” on Statia for details. This is what I’d call a true dive destination.

People at the shop are super, they will try to fulfill any request and they are all on the “outgoing” side – gotta love that! The dive sites are mostly within the Marine Park – similar to Bonaire, not as big but you do have to buy a tag that is good for a year $35.00, the park is strictly hands off so the critters just look back at you, lots of turtles – sharks and schooling fishes – if I had a stick I’d say I saw more big lobster than I could shake a stick at.

Black sand – volcanic island and when the sun is behind you it looks like glitter, this makes for a very good backdrop when you are working the cameras.

The dive sites are mostly close to the shop so the runs are short – 10 minutes or so. All of the briefings are done at the shop before you get to the boat so when you hit the dive sites – “pool is open” your dive times are limited by your computer (required) or air consumption, they want you back for the hang with 700 PSI. Nitrox is Free if you are certified, if not they can certify you for Nitrox.

We may stay at the Old Gin House – right next to the shop. Clean, nice folks - TV-Fridge - Wi-Fi - breakfast – Coffee all included.       I have some YouTube sites that tell you about the island but I did go and check it out, the diving is also a step back in time – fish and critters everywhere and if you can’t find them ask the guides.
